Background
The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a framework for describing and organizing information on functioning and disability. The main objectives are:
- Provide a unified and standardized language: To facilitate communication between different disciplines, professions, and countries in relation to health and disability.
- Establish a conceptual framework for the description of health and health-related conditions.
- Allow comparison of data: at the individual, national and international levels.
- Provide a systematic coding scheme for health states.
The ICF is structured around two main components. The first refers to functioning and disability per se, where aspects such as body functions and structures, activities, and participation are included. The second component refers to contextual factors such as environmental and personal factors.
The development of this tool in 2001 has meant a paradigm shift towards a biopsychosocial model that recognizes the dynamic interaction between health and disability. The ICF is an invaluable tool for using a common language, clinical practice, demographic studies, predictive models, plan and policy development, research, and social inclusion, among other uses.
